[Americana] Wells, Henry, and William G. Fargo. American Express Company Stock Certificate, signed
New York, June 26, 1858. Partially-printed American Express Company stock certificate (No. 3273), for five shares, signed by company president Henry Wells and company secretary William G. Fargo, and issued to D.F. Williams; counter-signed by company treasurer Alex Holland; endorsed on verso by Williams. Creasing from old folds; unevenly toned; loss at center (affecting text but not Wells' or Fargo's signatures) with old crude repair on verso.
A handsome and early American Express Company stock certificate, signed by founders Henry Wells and William G. Fargo. Founded in 1850, eight years prior to the issuance of this certificate, the American Express Company began as an express shipping service, facilitating the transport of goods, securities, and currency. The founders also established Wells Fargo in New York, two years later, in 1852.
